斗彩又称逗彩，创烧于明成化时期，是釉下彩（青花）与釉上彩结合的装饰品种。斗彩要预先在高温（1300°C）烧成的釉下青花瓷器上，用矿物颜料进行二次施彩，填补青花图案留下的空白并涂染青花轮廓线内的空间，然后再入小窑经低温（800°C）烘烤而成。
千百年来，鸳鸯，尤其是鸳鸯戏水的诗意图景，一直是夫妻和睦相处、相亲相爱的美好象征，也是爱情坚贞与纯洁的生动写照。此器造型美观大方而规整。其绘画精致，纹饰构图严谨，以多层带状辅纹衬托主题花纹，各层花纹间以青花双圈线相隔，装饰饱满但主次分明。外壁一周以斗彩饰鸳鸯戏水莲瓣图案，盘内有莲荷形暗刻。底写篆书款“大明万历年制”。皆因艺匠在此要求甚严，精致出尘的皇帝面前，只能力求尽善尽美，鞠躬尽瘁。此器造型俊美，胎质细致，釉色淡雅，画笔清秀流畅，寓意喜庆吉祥，动以新意，备储精巧，妙不可言，为大明万历年制御制瓷器中之精品。
